I'm openly weeping that you drew Kida. I love her but because her movie didn't do well financially, she never got into the parks. It breaks my heart to this day.

hey you know what would also be beautiful?? respecting the fact that she's a black woman and not drawing her super pale

Actually, Atlantis is thought to be in the center of the Atlantic, thus "Atlantis", making her more of a Native American or Hawaiian-like ethnicity than anything. Ergo, this is accurate.

People have linked you this image months ago and you still say this is an accurate representation of her? sta.sh/01ef3o97r521 Even the Disney movie has her looking nothing like this despite where you want to believe Atlantis was. Not to mention, the woman that voices her is like the go-to woman for voicing black female characters in the animation world: Cree Summers. African American woman.

wow i didn't know native american and Hawaiian = white now what a wild world we live in

also lol that doesn't excuse the blatant lightening of her skin but nice try i guess?? not to mention the fact that the disney team ALSO drew from african cultures, as i noticed someone else stated, but also the fact that Atlantis was believed to be off the coast of Madagascar, again, as another stated. that and it's fictional. it's a fictional place. so you stating that the specific area that it's SUPPOSED to be in is an excuse to whitewash a character is, how do you say
Stupid

"black woman"?? please. whatever the geographical background, the movie atlantis portrayed Atlanteans as some exotic race of super people who all had dark skin, straight silver hair and blue eyes. A obvious made up race for a fictional story. The character herself isn't even that many shades darker than this drawing. So please, stop smearing this artist's page with your passive-aggressive BS.

ya know black people can have blue eyes right??
but alright, sure, let's pretend that taking a dark skinned character with defined ethnic features and lightening their skin and shit to make them "prettier" doesn't have some VERY UNSAVORY implications about what you consider beautiful that you feel the need to "improve" a character by whitening them up.
it's shitty, it's racist, and it's disrespectful not only to the character but also to the people who LOOK like the character. and before you go all like "oh but she's got white hair and blue eyes!!" yeah lots of white fantasy characters have unusual or unrealistic hair and eye colors but somehow i don't ever see people insisting they're 'not really white'

She's actually not black. Maybe before you make requests, you should brush up on your ethnicities.

Not only did Disney draw on African culture when designing Kida, her people and their culture, Atlantis is also thought to have been off the coast of Madagascar. That all points to her being of African decent.

except she's literally a woman of color, a woc that many people would refer to as Black
example: sta.sh/01ef3o97r521
there's no excuse for this. whitewashing nonwhite characters is racism and is not acceptable when there are so many references of a character available

I love this Disney princess series but it took me a minute to recognize the character because of her pale skin. Not sure if this will be helpful but i've had great results using a skin palette sta.sh/016aazjadkv0 if you're interested it might be worth a try.

Please consider that not every artist lives in the western world (US, Canada, UK) Anime / Manga drawn by Asian artists will color other Asian characters a very pale color. There are a few reasons for this, but it has nothing to do with trying to make the character look European. In the US, we definitely have a problem when it comes to representing our diverse population, but I think this artist lives somewhere else. I would really give them the benefit of the doubt.

I agree this character is a little on the pale side, but what exactly is Kida's skin tone? In this picture, she looks slightly more tan than a European but it's hard to tell with the night filter. In the picture you linked Kida appears even darker.I did a search for Kida and this image appeared on her wiki page. She appears much paler in the Kingdom Hearts games. It looks like Disney isn't even consistent with their colors. Are you sure this artist is racist and not just confused?

Whitewashing in fan art usually isn't intentionally racist, but racist it still is.
Since most of the world is conditioned to think paler skin is more 'beautiful' they often carry this through in art without giving proper thought to the characters actual shade (even when it is noticeably darker)
In this case, where Kida is quite dark, there really is no excuse.
The artist should have known better, and if they didn't they sure should take it into account and make an effort to not whitewash characters in the future.
If you watch the movie, you see she is clearly dark. Disney is known to whitewash it's own characters in it's promotional art and merchandise, and receives a lot of backlash from the fans. Whitewashing a canon dark skinned character is disrespectful to poc who have barely any representation as it is.

It's not whitewashing... It's the artist's style. Take a look at all of the other characters that this person has drawn. They all are lighter than the original characters. even half of the white characters are lighter than they are supposed to be.

She's dark skinned. The artist whitewashed her.
The artist has done dark skin before:
mari945.deviantart.com/art/Pin…
But I'm guessing this is after the whitewashing comments and has learned from then.

Maybe you should watch the movies more because Kida isn't as dark as you are trying to make her out to be. Just take a look at this screenshot from Atlantis: Milo's Return i.ytimg.com/vi/xkAdUBDDwZM/hqd… and see the side by side comparison of Kida and Milo. Also take into account that Milo is very pale in comparison to everyone else in the Atlantis canon. Plus this gif of a scene from the first movie 24.media.tumblr.com/5c8e069349….

Don't know what you are seeing, but Kida is dark skinned. Not sure why you are trying so hard to make her seem lighter. I've seen the first movie recently. (The second one sucks imo)
There is an obvious filter on the gif you linked, but nice try.
